Our Story

Growing up on Long Island, NY in the early 1960's, my family frequently visited my Nana in Forest Hills, NY. A special treat often accompanied these visits: a trip to Witt's Confectionery & Ice Cream, now Eddie's Sweet Shop, just down the street on Metropolitan Avenue. Witt's was, to me, the most wonderful place on earth, featuring a marble counter along one side of the store, a display case filled with homemade chocolates on the other side and cozy booths in the back. My brothers, sister and I would get to order any one thing we wanted. For me, this was the first real decision I ever got to make on my own. It was never an easy one: should I choose a sundae, an ice cream soda, an orange freeze or a malted milk shake? Everything on the menu was wonderful. It has always been my dream to open a place just like Witt's Confectionery & Ice Cream - a place where memories that last a lifetime are made. Now 60 years later, that dream has become a reality. At the Grassland Dessert Café, you can enjoy a great dessert such as ice cream, gelato, smoothies, acai bowls, and baked goods along with a great cup of coffee. More importantly, it's a place to create great memories, talk with family and friends, meet new people or simply RELAX. After all these years, what I remember most about going to Witt's with my family are the memories, not necessarily the taste of the ice cream.
